City in a Garden: A Celebration of Chicago’s Design, Art, and Community

From the Desk of Nathan Wright

When I first arrived in Chicago, I couldn’t have imagined the path that lay ahead. My first job here was with the nonprofit Architreasures as a project manager, helping bring public art and community spaces to life in neighborhoods across the city. That work introduced me to countless visionaries—but one meeting, in particular, changed everything.

It was through Architreasures that I met Roy Diblik, a master plantsman and co-owner of Northwind Perennial Farm. Roy’s deep knowledge of plants and design sparked something in me. It was the catalyst for my pursuit of Landscape Architecture—a journey that would eventually lead to founding Nathan Wright Landscape Design, where I now have the privilege of creating thoughtful, artfully executed outdoor spaces for clients throughout Chicago.

On Thursday, August 21, we’ll bring that journey full circle with City in a Garden, an evening that honors Chicago’s original motto, Urbs in Horto—a city in a garden—while celebrating the spirit of collaboration and creativity that has shaped my life and work.

The event will take place at our garden and gathering space, Nuluum, in Logan Square. We’ll be co-hosting with En Masse Architecture & Design, the design firm founded by my college friend Mike Shively and his business partner Lucas Goldbach. The night will feature art installations by another Ball State University alum, Matthew Hoffman, whose “You Are Beautiful” message has become a beloved part of Chicago’s landscape.

We’ll also debut the newly painted mural at Nuluum by Slang, a longtime friend of my wife, Lola Wright. Slang’s work transforms our space into a vivid celebration of art, story, and place.

This will be a true Chicago garden party—one night only—under the stars with installations, light, cocktails, and transformative space. All proceeds benefit Architreasures, the organization that launched my career and helped shape my vision for the power of design to connect people and transform communities.

Cocktails will be generously provided by local favorite Crafthouse Cocktails.

Come celebrate the city we love, the friendships that have spanned decades, and the ways design can make the world more beautiful, connected, and alive.
