At Nathan Wright Landscape Design, collaboration is at the heart of our work. That spirit came to life in a project we completed with Helping Hand, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They wanted more than just a playground—they wanted a space that fostered community, creativity, and connection. The result is an inclusive playground design that reflects both function and beauty.
From Basic to Inspired
When the project began, the initial design was little more than a rectangle with two pieces of equipment. Functional, yes—but uninspired. The people at Helping Hand envisioned more: vegetable planters, spaces to sit, and elements that could bring joy beyond traditional play structures.
That’s where our team stepped in. By weaving together standard playground equipment with thoughtful design, we transformed the space into a comprehensive outdoor experience. This was a truly collaborative landscape design project—our team worked closely with a civil engineer, our partners at Helping Hand, and REiHL, a national playground specialist, each of whom brought expertise that shaped the final vision.
Designing for Accessibility and Flow
Accessibility wasn’t just a box to check; it was central to the mission. Our design integrated ADA-compliant ramps and circulation routes, while also navigating regulated fall zones required for safe play. These functional challenges became opportunities to create graceful pathways and inviting gathering zones, demonstrating how creative landscape solutions can address technical requirements with elegance.
We worked with a civil engineer to address site drainage, ensuring that stormwater moved effectively to the corners of the property. Rather than treating this as a constraint, we used it to shape the flow of pathways and the rhythm of outdoor rooms, blending practical solutions with a sense of place.
Layers of Plant Life
Even though plants weren’t the main focus, we found creative ways to bring nature into the design:
- Perennial gardens for beauty and durability
- Edible garden beds for hands-on learning and nourishment
- Sculptural “flower” instruments from Percussion Play, bringing music into the garden
- Colorful wall murals that extended the garden theme across the building façade
Together, these layers gave the playground vibrancy and variety—proof that even in a highly functional space, plant-inspired design can shine.
Creating a Sense of Place
Rather than adding straight, utilitarian walkways, we designed winding pathways that divide the site into smaller, more intimate zones. The effect is a sense of journey—like following a “yellow brick road” through a playful landscape. This design choice gives the playground a human scale, turning a wide-open space into something welcoming and personal—an experiential outdoor space where movement feels as engaging as the destination.
A Project Beyond the Ordinary
The majority of our landscape design and build work is for high-end residential and commercial properties, so Helping Hand Playground was outside our typical scope. But that’s what makes it special. It demonstrates the flexibility of our approach: listening closely to clients, honoring their mission, and designing spaces that truly serve their community.
Our guiding principles remained the same—attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and a belief that outdoor spaces should bring people together. Whether for a nonprofit, a private residence, or a commercial property, our goal is the same: to deliver custom outdoor design that connects people to each other and to the spaces they inhabit.
We’re proud to have been part of this project alongside Helping Hand and the installation team at REiHL. Together, we created a playground that’s more than the sum of its parts—it’s a place of connection, joy, and belonging.
